Recently, my son Morgan and I had the opportunity to attend the very first American Security (AMSEC) Dealer Summit — and it was eye-opening, to say the least. As a long-time dealer and installer of AMSEC products, We’ve always respected the brand and AMSEC has become our number one selling safe, but after this trip, I can confidently say they’re in a class of their own.
This Wasn’t Just a Tour — It Was a Conversation
Unlike most factory tours where you’re walked through the process and sent on your way, over these 3 days, AMSEC turned this into a true dialogue. We met with their President and CEO, head manufacturing and head engineers, chief technology officer, chief operating officer, chief financial officer, human resources head, director of marketing and his team and others including a newly hired consulted gifted in the areas of social media marketing and website design, plus many others at the factory offices- many of whom we had talked to on the phone or via email so it was great to put a name with the face.
They didn’t just talk — they listened and took notes.
They were eager to hear what we, the dealers, are seeing in the field, what our customers say and want, what design changes we’d suggest and what problems we run into during installs and service. They took notes, asked follow-up questions, and made it abundantly clear: they want to be the best and are willing to learn how to do that by listening to the people who sell their products directly to their end users. Quite frankly, I was humbled to have been invited to this event- but by the end, it was clear AMSEC’s leadership was just as grateful we came. They were laser-focused on learning from us and understanding our customers better and their hospitality was beyond expectation! (they even took us bowling one night)
Why AMSEC Costs More — And Why It’s Worth Every Penny
One major takeaway was just how labor-intensive and meticulous their safe production process really is — especially for their Dri-light and high-pressure concrete filled models. Until this visit, I figured it was a simple process to fill the safes with this slurry. It is NOT, the safes have to be braced inside and out to prevent distortion of the steel as the Dri-light or concrete cures. It’s a time consuming process but the end result is a safe with an independently-tested fire rating. (The only one that I know of in the industry as most companies perform in-house testing or some, no tests at all) This method also keeps the fire lining material contained between two layers of steel helping to capture the vapor that escapes when the fire lining is heated. Unlike brands using gypsum board (drywall), this reduces significantly the contamination of contents inside the safe with a corrosive vapor.
And their TL-15 and TL-30 rated safes? The testing and certification process is no joke. These safes are built to survive sophisticated break-in attempts using tools from prybars and sledgehammers to powered saws. Here’s something you might not know, during a 30 minute UL test, the time only counts when a tool is touching the safe so a 30 minute test may take 4 hours or so. It isn’t just set a 30 minute timer and attack. These TL rated safes are reinforced with high-strength proprietary concrete mixes that only a few in the industry even attempt to use. The concrete that they use in these models is high strength psi exceeding the psi of most bridges and high-rise buildings at 9800-12,500 psi. This mixture, along with the construction methods have to be inspected routinely for quality and compliance. They also get tested by UL every 7 years.
AMSEEC is constantly testing their products and if something is found that could be improved, they do it. Often dealers and consumers don’t even know an improvement has been made. It just needed to be done so it was. A lot of the dealers, including ourselves, mentioned that these innovations and improvements would make great social media posts. In the past, they just haven’t done much marketing like this and it shows. Companies like Liberty safe are a household name whereas few folks other than locksmiths and jewelers have ever heard of AMSEC even though they make home safe and gun safe lines and build much heavier duty safes than Liberty. Liberty has done a much better job at marketing though so credit where credit is due. I think that with AMSEC’s new marketing team, it won’t take long for folks to start realizing who to turn to for a quality safe. One of the dealers even said something to the effect of, “Other manufactures are scared to death that you (AMSEC) will realize how good your products are and that all you have to do to beat them is to market them”.
I think AMSEC is so focused on making safes that marketing has been a second thought. It sounds like this is about to change!
U.S. Steel vs. Imported Steel — There’s a Real Difference
A topic that doesn’t get enough attention is the type of steel used. AMSEC uses high-grade U.S.-made steel, while many imported safes use recycled Chinese steel — often sourced from scrapped appliances like fridges and washing machines.
That recycled steel can be inconsistent and brittle, especially in weld zones and bends. AMSEC’s steel holds its shape and integrity even under serious attack. For anyone who thinks “steel is steel” — it’s not. Think back to the times that you’ve broken a bolt and said, “Dang this Chinese junk”. That’s the difference I’m talking about.
Silent Innovation
One of the most surprising things? How much AMSEC does behind the scenes that they never talk about.
They’re quietly building serious safes — while other companies race to the bottom with thinner and thinner steel and cheaper components.
A Spirit of Service You Don’t See Every Day
After the recent Malibu and California wildfires, AMSEC stepped up. They opened any brand of safe, free of charge, for victims trying to retrieve valuables from the ashes. You won’t find that in a brochure — but it should be talked about.
Final Thoughts
I’ve been to several safe factories in my time. This one was different. AMSEC isn’t just manufacturing safes — they’re building partnerships with dealers, they’re listening to the market, and they’re pushing to raise the bar for what a quality safe should be.
If you’ve ever wondered why an AMSEC safe costs a little more — now you know. And if you’re shopping for serious security and fire protection, we’d love to show you what that really looks like.
